The advantages of water underfloor heating

Water underfloor heating is the most comfortable heating solution and with the correct heat sources the most cost effective means of heating. The water is heated by a renewable source such as Herz wood pellets/chips/logs boilers, solar water heating collectors, heat pumps, pellet or wood fire places with water heating, then distributed through underfloor pipes until the correct room temperature is achieved. WATER UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Water Underfloor Heatingby ECOSMART™, water is heated and stored in a storage tank or geyser by one or more heat sources. The main heat source used by EcoSmart™ are Herz wood log, wood pellet and wood chip boilers, which is also the most economical, green and carbon neutral way of heating water. EcoSmart™ also use Solar Collectors, Heat Pumps, Wood or Pellet Fire Places with Water Heat Exchangers. 

The stored hot water is then pumped via feed and return pipes to one or more manifolds hidden in the home. the manifolds in turn have special PEX (Polyethylene crossed-linked) pipes with oxygen barrier layer which are installed in the floor to a special design. The hot water in the pipes are regulated via actuator valves on the manifold and room thermostats distributed throughout the home. Should heating be required in any room according to a set temperature on the thermostat, a signal is passed to the actuator to open and a pump to start circulating hot water via the manifold to the embedded water pipes in the floor, until the desired temperature is reached in the room. The thermostat having reached the set temperature then sends a signal to stop the pump circulation and the actuator valve is closed.

EcoSmart™ Radiant heating systems supply heat directly to the floor or to panels in the wall or ceiling of a house. The systems depend largely on radiant heat transfer — the delivery of heat directly from the hot surface to the people and objects in the room via infrared radiation. Radiant heating is the effect you feel when you can feel the warmth of a hot stovetop element from across the room. When radiant heating is located in the floor, it is often called radiant floor heating or simply floor heating.
RADIANT HEATING

Radiant Floor heating has a number of advantages. It is more efficient than baseboard heating and usually more efficient than forced-air heating because it eliminates duct losses. People with allergies often prefer radiant heat because it doesn’t distribute allergens like forced air systems can. Hydronic (liquid-based) systems use little electricity, a benefit for homes off the power grid or in areas with high electricity prices. Frequently Asked Questions 

Should the entire home be heated?
Any portion of the home may be heated no matter how small. It must be noted that heat will travel from a warm area to a colder area. This could lead to the heat source which may have been designed for a small area being undersized, and therefore being overworked which may lead to early malfunction.

Can any underfloor pipe be used?
Using the incorrect pipe will lead to early disintegration. The best pipe to use is manufactured from (polyethylene) PEX and should have an oxygen barrier layer to protect all metal components in the Underfloor Heating System such as pumps, manifolds fittings, valves etc.

How many pipes are required for a house?
The Underfloor heating pipes must be designed professionally. For instance, if a pipe is to long the energy will be used in the initial part of the room and the remainder of the room will take much longer to heat up. This will lead to uneven temperatures in the room and in the home.

How many heat sources can be used?
Any amount of heat sources may be used. The more heat sources are used, the more electrical energy will be saved. The homes that have been designed and installed by EcoSmart™ have mostly used Herz Wood Pellet Boilers or Pellet and Wood Fire Places which save the most electrical energy, Solar collectors mostly for the domestic water, and Samsung Heat Pumps used when the other heat sources are not being used.

Can any geyser be used?
The geyser sizes are extremely important and must be sized correctly firstly for domestic use according to the design of the house. The Buffer tank is also specially sized and designed according to the area to be heated as well as the ancillaries being heated such as Hydronic heated towel rails, Pool, Jacuzzi, Fan coils, Radiators etc.
The inlet and outlet sizes of the geysers and buffer tanks are vital to effectively feed the correct amount of water without causing lack of water, water noises, etc.

How long will the system last?
The system consists of different components which have different Warranties or Guarantees.
EcoSmart™ use Austria Email Geysers and Buffer Tanks or Solartherm Geysers in smaller installations which have a 10 Year Guarantee. EcoSmart™ imports geysers and buffer tanks specially designed and manufactured from Austria Email, Austria.
EcoSmart™ use imported German underfloor heating pipes which have a minimum 50 year life expectancy.
The solar collectors have a warrantee of 10 years with a life expectancy far beyond.
We expect pumps to last for 15 Years although they have a 1 year warrantee.

How much electricity will I save?
This is totally dependent on various factors such as:

  • Insulation used throughout the house as described above
    Insulation is the single most important factor in the home for cooling and heating. If the home is insulated properly the energy costs are greatly reduced.
  • Number of heat sources used  as above such as Solar, Heat Pumps and Fire Places/Boilers
  • The more heat sources other than electrical elements are used the more savings will be realized
  • System design and system control
    EcoSmart™ will professionally design all aspects of your home for heating and cooling with a totally integrated system. The savings you will realize are described in detail in the different product we professionally install.

 

Interesting Information from EcoSmart™

  • Underfloor heating pipes, if used with water at ambient temperatures only would in all probability last hundreds of years. The pipes deteriorate more rapidly due to the temperature changes in the pipe when heating is turned on and off. The PEX pipes, Multi-Layer pipes or PE-RT pipes used by EcoSmart™ are specially manufactured with an oxygen barrier layer for a minimum life expectancy of 50 years. When using the incorrect pipe the life expectancy may be reduced to 10 years or less.
  • Insulation of your home is extremely important. We can deduce that if a room is insulated with thick enough insulation in the floor, walls and ceiling and with double glazing etc. The room could be heated with a candle.
  • EcoSmart™ import Austria Email Geysers and Buffer Tanks. The geyser size and inlet and outlet sizes are also designed for optimum flow rates eliminating lack of flow in the shower slowing down to a trickle. The same design and manufacture is performed on the buffer tanks. This has to be designed professionally as for instance heating a home with many underfloor heating pipes cannot be fed with firstly a geyser with a 22mm outlet or an incorrectly sized feed pipe. Using incorrect pipes in both the domestic and buffer tank environment will lead to amongst others water noise when water flows too fast.

How does wood pellets, wood chips or wood logs, also known as Biomass heating work?

Heating water with wood has been happening for almost as long as fire has been around. In South Africa one of the names for heating water with wood fires is a 'Donkey'. Water heating with wood has now become very sophisticated, with Closed Combustion Wood Log or Wood Pellets fire places with built-in water heat exchangers. Herz Boilers using either wood pellets, wood chips or wood log boilers are the most and advanced and economical in heating water for domestic use, space heating, pool or Jacuzzi heating.

Advantages of using wood pellets, chips or logs as a source for water heating

Energy Efficient.
Water may be heated very efficiently using closed combustion fire places or boilers. Currently the most cost effective method of heating water. Wood pellets for instance supplies 5kW of energy from only 1kg of pellets.

Green renewable biomass.
The use of biomass as a heat source is regarded as a renewable energy. Biomass is also regarded as Carbon Neutral, the CO2 emissions is the same if burnt or decaying, making it a totally 'green' source of energy

Availability
Wood logs and wood chips are widely available in South Africa. The attempt to remove or curb the alien trees is massive source of wood. There is an estimated one million tons of wood waste produced from processing plants in South Africa. The majority not being used.

How much electricity will I save?
Using Biomass per say does not use any electricity. The added function of heating water in a Herz boiler or a fire place requires minimal energy to run the electronics which controls the automatic feeding of pellets, the ignition mechanism, the fan to control the burning process, check the temperatures and activating a circulating pump to transfer the energy.

  • The electrical requirement for the ignition phase of a few minutes is 500Watts
  • The electrical requirement for the electronics, fan, motors and circulating pump during operation depending on the model varies around 200Watts
  • Electricity saving increase by the Herz Boilers to heat water that may be used for any of the following simultaneously

Interesting Information from EcoSmart™

  • EcoSmart™ are currently selling wood pellets at R2.74 per kilogram. One kilogram wood pellets delivers 5kW of energy. The price per kilowatt is therefore R0.548 per kilowatt of energy.
  • The Cape Town official electricity rate is R2.139. The wood pellet cost is therefore around 25% of the electricity cost.
  • Heat pumps use less electricity but still more than twice that of the Herz Boiler in comparative costs.

How does a Herz Pellet Boiler Heating System work?

The Herz Pellet Boiler is a highly sophisticated controlled enclosed fire place. The Herz boilers are available in either wood log, wood pellet or wood chip versions. The Herz boilers have power range from 10 kilo-Watt to 1500 kilo-Watt, and may be cascaded up to 6 together.

The Herz Pellet Boilers have sensors to control the Boiler itself, one or more geysers, one or more buffer tanks, water underfloor heating, radiators, hydronic heated towel rails, pool and Jacuzzi heating, control the hot water ring main as well as Solar Water Heating Panels.

The Herz when required will load itself with wood pellets or chips, then ignite the wood and regulate the fire with a fan and uses a Lambda probe to read the flu gasses. The reason why the Herz Pellet Boiler is 97% efficient. The fire place is self-cleaning. The heat produced, around 650 to 680 degrees with a maximum of 950 degrees is used to heat water via a self-cleaning heat exchanger.

The Herz pellet Boiler will heat water until all settable temperatures have been achieved and will then burn itself out and remain in standby mode until heating is required. The Herz System may be monitored via internet, and may accept changes to the temperature requirements.

 

 

Advantages of using Herz Pellet Boiler heating system

Energy Efficient
The Herz Pellet Boiler uses less than 250 Watts when operating, and uses 500 Watts to ignite the wood for approximately two minutes. Electrical consumption to heat domestic water, provide space heating, hydronic towel rails, pool and Jacuzzi heating, control the hot water ring main as well as Solar Water Heating Panels is almost completely eliminated.

The Herz Pellet Boilers are 96% to 97% efficient. The Lambda probe in the flu allows the gasses to be analysed and the fire to be regulated to maximum efficiency. This is the same as modern motorcars which have the Lambda probe installed in the exhaust system.

The Herz Pellet Boilers use 1 kg of wood pellets to produce 5 kilo-Watts of energy. One ton of pellets will therefore produce 5000 kilo-Watts of energy and produce only 10 kg of ash which is a very good fertilizer and can be used directly in the garden.

Environmentally Friendly

The wood that is used for the manufacture of wood pellets are normally waste wood. The wood is a renewable energy, and is carbon neutral. These are the reasons why biomass boiler use is the fastest growing means of heating water.

Control

The Herz Pellet Boiler via its touch screen maybe completely programmed to monitor and heat water for domestic, buffer, radiators, Water underfloor heating, hydronic heated towel rails, pool and Jacuzzi. The Herz may also be controlled via an internet connection. The Herz Boilers are able to email EcoSmart™, client or nominee on general information or if problems have occurred. 

Durability

The Herz Pellet Boilers are required to be serviced after 3000 hours of operation or one year. There are very few moving parts on the Herz boiler, all of which are replaceable. The Herz Boiler has a life expectancy of more than 50 years.

Frequently Asked Questions 

Do I have to fill the Herz boiler with wood pellets or wood chips all the time?
The Herz Wood Log Boiler must be fed manually, and once full will burn for 8 hours at maximum output. The Herz Wood Pellet or Wood Chip boilers will feed themselves automatically. Their feeding mechanism can vary between screw feed or vacuum fed. The wood pellet or wood chip storage compartment may be sized to be sufficient in size to feed for a day to a year or more. The pellet storage compartment could be housed next to Herz boiler, above the Herz boiler or below in the ground. 

How often do I need to clean the ash out?

The Herz Boilers will produce less than 1% ash of the wood being burned. The ash being produced is dependent on the usage to heat water, and the ash should be removed around 3 times annually. 

How often must the Herz be maintained?
The Herz Boilers must be serviced after 3000 hours operating time or once a year, whichever is sooner.

 

How long will the system last?
The Herz Boilers have system consists of different Warranties or Guarantees on the different components.

Interesting Information from EcoSmart™

  • Underfloor heating pipes, if used with water at ambient temperatures only would in all probability last hundreds of years. The pipes deteriorate more rapidly due to the temperature changes in the pipe when heating is turned on and off. The PEX pipes used by EcoSmart™ are specially manufactured with an oxygen barrier layer for a minimum life expectancy of 50 years. When using the incorrect pipe the life expectancy may be reduced to 10 years or less.
  • Insulation of your home is extremely important. We can deduce that if a room is insulated with thick enough insulation in the floor, walls and ceiling and with double glazing etc. The room could be heated with a candle.
  • EcoSmart™ imports Austria Email Geysers and Buffer Tanks. The geyser size and inlet and outlet sizes are also designed for optimum flow rates eliminating lack of flow in the shower slowing down to a trickle. The same design and manufacture is performed on the buffer tanks. This has to be designed professionally as for instance heating a home with many underfloor heating pipes cannot be fed with firstly a geyser with a 22mm outlet or an incorrectly sized feed pipe. Using incorrect pipes in both the domestic and buffer tank environment will lead to amongst others water noise when water flows too fast.

How it works

This is a remote control with few buttons and lots of functions. In addition to the nor-mal daily and weekly programming functions, you can program different temperatures in different time slots during the day. Since the temperature can be read exactly in the spot where it is left (thermostat function), the comfort level is assured.

Firstly water is heated and stored in a storage tank or geyser by one or more heat sources. The main heat source used by EcoSmart™ are Herz wood log, wood pellet and wood chip boilers, which is also the most economical, green and carbon neutral way of heating water. EcoSmart™ also use Solar Collectors, Heat Pumps, Wood or Pellet Fire Places with Water Heat Exchangers.

The stored hot water is then pumped via feed and return pipes to one or more manifolds hidden in the home. the manifolds in turn have special PEX (Polyethylene crossed-linked) pipes with oxygen barrier layer which are installed in the floor to a special design. The hot water in the pipes are regulated via actuator valves on the manifold and room thermostats distributed throughout the home. Should heating be required in any room according to a set temperature on the thermostat, a signal is passed to the actuator to open and a pump to start circulating hot water via the manifold to the embedded water pipes in the floor, until the desired temperature is reached in the room. The thermostat having reached the set temperature then sends a signal to stop the pump circulation and the actuator valve is closed.
